Lum Abner Shows
Am I racist for thinking Amos and Andy is a very funny show?
I recently got the collection on DVD and having a ball watching the show. Very funny. Great characters. I don't see how it is racist. With all the hoopla I was expecting some sort of minstrel show with a bunch of buffoons. Its certainly not any worse than Sanford and Son.
and how come people didn't attack Lum & Abner for being racist? That show portrays white people as a bunch of dim witted hicks.
And don't forget the Honeymooners. Who was that targeted at? I remember as a kid, being kind of upset that they canceled Amos-n-Andy. Then over the years I figured it was just my innocence and I must not have recognized the truly demeaning racial stereotypes that the NAACP insisted this show was all about. A few years ago, I saw a tape of a couple of the shows in the series and was surprised that it didn't seem as demeaning as they claimed. It was just humor. Who could ever watch the Three Stooges, or the Marx Brothers and say there was anything about Amos-n-Andy that callously targeted Blacks? Were British people stereotyped by Stan Laurel?
I really think the only thing the NAACP accomplished with this "statement" was to cause several fine Black comedic actors and actresses to lose their livelihood.
But then, I'm not Black, so I guess I just don't see it the same way. I don't know.
