World Day of Youth (WYD) will be held in Sydney, Australia, Sunday, July 20, 2008. Pope Benedict XVI will visit Australia for the first time more people are expected for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Although WYD is a Catholic event, the Pope is an important figure on the world stage, and regardless of your religion, the Pope still has global influence.
So what does the Pope think about work?
Pope John Paul II wrote "Laborem Exercens" as a letter to the Catholic Church about human labor, whereas as an essential part of life. Here are 7 key points of the letter may help you reflect on your work.
1. Through work, people can participate in the creative action even as God. Look around architecture, art, industry, agriculture, business, cities, books, inventions, technology - Until the chair you sit on the clothes you wear. The constructed world is an expression of human labor and a large party is wonderful. People should imitate God in creation: the work, then relax.
2. More attention should be awarded to the employee for the work they do, because people are centrally important. Workers are not only resources and corporate is not only an economic decision. "The work has no meaning in itself: it is the human being counts. Individuals need working at jobs they can speak, and be able to demonstrate their abilities. People need to be commended and rewarded for their work.
3. The work is sometimes a heavy burden. "Through the hard work of your hands, you get your bread until you return to the land where you were taken "(Genesis 3:19). Sometimes it a physical burden and depletes us, sometimes it is a struggle mentally or emotionally. But the work also allows us to become more human, to learn about ourselves, life and others.
4. The work is essential to family life, because it provides income and education. Job within the community for the good of the family and also gives other people a purpose to their lives. The work can foster self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment which are essential for happiness.
5. The work should be rewarded accordingly. Compensation financial exchange of work is what keeps the functioning of society. Other benefits should also be given to the employee including health care, vacation and rest, and safety of working conditions.
6. Labor unites people and creates communities. Unions and associations should be encouraged to pursue a common good and prevent injustice in the workplace. The work should be accessible to all people equally. Persons with disabilities should be supported in their right to work. Immigrants should have the same opportunities as others because they bring skills to other countries for their new home.
7. 'We inherit the work generations before us, and we participate in building the future. "The work that makes us part of the stream of humanity that continues in the world. We must be aware of where we come from, and what kind of world we create for our children. We need to examine the effect our work on society and the environment. Our job is to build a better future?
"The work is a good thing not only because it is useful and enjoyable, but also because it expresses and increases the dignity of the worker. Via work we not only transform the world, we ourselves are transformed, becoming a human being. "
