Audio books are a great way to use the "empty time". Already in the 1920s, the Royal National Institute for the Blind in England (RNIB) undertake research to find the best way to produce audio books for blind soldiers who have been the result of the First World War battles. They finally decided to produce audio books on the LP's and first made in 1926. To read them, they were placed on the actors to the former LP, which had to be cranked by hand and delivered the sound in the Big Horn. It was a great development for the blind, but has hardly been used by normal consumers. Then these audio books from RNIB has remained a niche product and never reached the masses.

The concept was successful and in 1936 the Royal National Institute for the Blind has launched the "Talking Book Service. The first two books they produce are:" The murder Roger Ackroyd (Agatha Christie) and "Thyphoon" (Joseph Conrad). Because the files could only hold 25 minutes of spoken word, audiobook average had be recorded on an average of ten documents.

During WWII, the studio used by the RNIB was bombed, and a month later a replacement studio was bombed as well, destroying much of the equipment needed to continue production. The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), which had begun to produce audio books in the United States has sent spare parts and equipment in London, so that production could be resumed.

The former LP have been replaced by modern LP's and, finally, cassettes, making listening to books Audio easier. Sony Walkman allowed to take your audio book with you and listen on the road. Then audio books began to be purchased by consumers in general. The next step was to produce these books to listen to a CD, which makes them even more convenient.

In recent years, audio book technology has made a qualitative leap: Digital MP3 files can be loaded on a drive that only weighs a few grams and operates on a set of batteries for several hours. The most popular player is probably Apple's iPod, but there are many other MP3 players on the market who have helped make listening to content on the go very popular.
