Atlas Shrugged Ayn

Land
A poor and brilliant architect who refuses to compromise his principles, must fight poverty, credit-grabbing colleagues rejection, slander, manipulation of a devious journalist but popular, and finally, imprisonment, to achieve his freedom to live and work his way.
Main Characters
Howard Roark: A poor but brilliant architect, and an individualist. He is a man who believes that his interviews work for him. Pity then that the world is not fair and people will take credit for everything they can. It requires a lot of struggle and rejection, but did later, the jackpot. This is his story, how the individualist fighting the establishment.
Dominica Francon: The Yin Yang Roark's. Unlike Roark, she's born of a rich father, a famous architect. She hates her father for his lack absolute passion and conviction to his work and his greed. An individualist itself, it is also extremely arrogant, beautiful, and a famous art-reviewer in its own right.
Gail Wynand: A powerful man and a megalomaniac. But as another powerful figure in the book (Ellsworth Toohey) points out, there is less "evolved" in his hunger for power - it is too ostentatious. A Publishing czar among other things, he is accustomed to having his way. He is ruthless, manipulative and extremely vindictive. He falls in love with Dominica, only to have her at hand and not yet.
Ellsworth Toohey: For me, the most brilliant character ever devised, and also the scariest. Toohey is greedy for power, as Wynand. But Unlike Wynand, Toohey is subtle. It is control over people in an apparently innocent, but actually more deadly. It is to be poor, but has its tentacles in all major organizations and communities. It is considered an expert in art and a selfless do-gooder, when it is the opposite of what it is. One of its deadliest principles is as follows: he believes all engineering must be nipped in the bud, because the engineering can think for itself and influence people, and therefore can not be controlled. So to kill the genius he Wield its power as an expert and proclaims mediocre or downright bad. He has ruined the careers of many artists. Since it is considered an authority on architecture, it actually manages to lower the engineering Roark (for now) of this strategy.
Peter Keating: The man weakest in the book. Peter is a charmer shallow and talentless. He charms his way to school and work, making Roark do his homework first, assignments and office too. (Roark works for him, apparently money to survive, but given its ideals, this critic thinks it should have resist.) But one day, Keating luck runs out. He married Dominique de lust and greed and breaks the heart of his longtime friend. Marriage with Dominique shatters all the disappointment he has constructed around him. He is forced to face what is a weak pathetic unafraid operations body his wife for a prestigious task. Therefore, Keating became a wreck, plagued by his conscience, until even his most-ambitious mother regrets pushing his son into something he was never supposed to achieve.
While many characters have been brilliantly conceptualized, the character of the protagonist himself seems a bit bland. While Ayn Rand gives a more detailed background on Toohey and Wynand, one wonders on what kind of Roark / past Children must have. In addition, Roark, for the most part of the book, seems devoid of feelings. He says he rarely thinks (except the end when he is on a roll). His only strong emotion is his love of Dominica (and Architecture). Fittingly, Dominique comes across as too bright but cold.
However, the book is easily one of the most memorable ever. Some will love the individuality and integrity "of Roark, some (like this reviewer) May ambivalent feelings about the deliberate absence of key players to emotional, some will embrace fully the philosophy of Ayn Rand objectivism (among other things, objectivism dictates that an individual pursuit of happiness / rational self-interest should be its main goal), while some may denounce the book as promoting selfishness and egoism. Love or hate it, you can not assigned by it.
All books by Ayn Rand to pause and reflect (Atlas Shrugged, We the Living), and it is no different. If you looking for light reading, this book will not be cut. It is extremely intense and readers will probably need frequent breaks in their reading. But at the end of the book, it almost feels as if you had lived a full life, and experienced myriad dimensions of her! Such is the intensity and the power of the book.
