The term "Old Time Radio" refers to the entertainment programs that have been disseminated to the public from early 1920 to early 1960. At the beginning, most radio programs emulated the vaudeville acts that are the mainstay of public amusement before radio. Comics and singers trust waves! Best of all, you do not leave your house to enjoy their talents! Finally, however, the public has matured and Other types of programs were added to the grid of radio. Drama series has become extremely popular shows including about doctors, serials, and even film scripts have been adapted for radio. Action Series led the cops, thieves, private detectives, and westerns at home! Fantasy series delighted the audience with familiar characters, including Superman and The Green Hornet! Horror fans had their share of ghosts, vampires and werewolves. Those CRAVEDI science fiction got their thirst weekly tales of the future, space travel and exploration of the unknown. Game shows as "You Bet Your Life" gave the average person to escape from everyday life!

The first commercial radio station United States (KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) began broadcasting gigs in 1920. In 1922, the first regularly broadcast old time shows radio had begun. Until the late 1920s, music programs have been most popular with shows highlighting the opera, big bands, jazz, classical and popular music.

In the 1930s, the number of days has appeared with romance and another subject that appeals to the housewife Typical American. Most of these programs were sponsored by soap products and that is where the term "Soap Opera" comes from. Radio shows like "The Cisco Kid" and "Captain Midnight" were broadcast in the afternoon for the entertainment of young people then they returned from school. Comedy series began to appear including the "George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" and "Jack Benny Show, which both began in 1932. " Amos' N Andy "actually hit the airwaves in 1928! Then in the early 1940s, an almost endless list of comedy programs joined those pioneers and comedy shows became the genre's most prolific until the end of Old Time Radio.

In 1947, 82% of people in the United States have listened to the radio on a regular basis. The Old Time Radio shows were not as Most audio books today where someone with a pleasant voice reads you a book. Old Time Radio shows were productions as TV shows today. There were sound effects, multiple actors in multiple roles, and scripts of the first order! Much people today are shocked by how they can be entertaining when they hear their first program of Old Time Radio. The absence of video can actually be a plus! Your mind often imagines the characters and the scenery much better than seeing things on a television screen.

Most of Old Time Radio Shows were broadcast live until the late 1940s. Therefore, the most popular programs have been be performed twice due to the time difference between east and west coast. Most of these programs are lost to us today that were generally not recorded. There are exceptions where the advertiser and wanted copies of their programs or some programs broadcast in syndication. Fortunately, by the early 1950s, many programs were broadcast live on the east coast and recorded for later broadcast on the west coast. A surprisingly large number of these recordings still exist today, thanks mainly to hobbyists collector who acquires over the years. Because of their age, most of them are available free on the Web, or at very low cost on CD (in mp3 format) of many retailers.

In the mid-1950s TV has become the king of entertainment and radio was transforming into a mostly music format. There were shows, however, which continued for some years and some of them had even been released at the same time as a TV version of the same program.
