Name Camulodunum Colchester is Celtic and means "fortress Camulos' (which was the war god of the Celts). After the Romans conquered Britain a fortress was built consisting of Legionnaires. Colchester then served as the capital of Roman Britain and was very well defended as it was built on a hill.

After the destruction of Colchester, London became the new capital of the famous Britannia, but it would still be the Council native province would still meet in Colchester, because of the divine temple of Claude who has served as the headquarters of the Council. Later, the Roman force moved North Colchester and became a colony.
Then around AD 400, the Saxons came to Britain and took over Colchester. They reorganized the defenses dramatically and increased security, they also managed to block the door Balkerne who was one of the entries in Colchester Roman times, and some public buildings outside the city have also been abandoned. This made the city less vulnerable to attacks and much safer. But in the 9th century, the Vikings landed in Britain from Scandinavia and the invading Saxons. He remained in the hands of Vikings up to 920 AD, when the British colonists claimed Colchester back with the help of Edward the Elder.
Improving and major changes in Colchester and then came in the medieval town a time when the Normans in the 11th century AD built what is now Colchester Castle. The Normans were very clever in positioning the castle. It overlooked the entire city and was built a top a large hill, where the vaults of the Roman temple of Claudius were located. The Normans also built the Abbey of St Johns and the Priory of St Botolph, where the ruins of the two can still be found around Colchester. You can still see the front door of the Abbey and the foundations and walls of the priory.

After the assignment both Lucas and Lisle had been executed in the lands surrounding Colchester Castle.
