HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It is a federal law enacted in 1996 as an attempt of gradual reform of health care and health experts consider the most important health care legislation in Medicare since 1965.

HIPAA is intended to reform the health sector by reducing costs, streamlining processes and administrative burdens, and improve their privacy and information security patient.

There are two separate laws that are under the HIPAA umbrella: HIPAA Privacy and HIPAA Security. HIPAA Privacy relates to the protection and confidentiality protected information of individuals of Health (IHP), while HIPAA security concerns the protection and confidentiality of the health of protected persons "Information in electronic form (ePHI). HIPAA privacy is what most of us feel when we hear the term HIPAA (HIPAA Awareness Training, Notice of privacy practices, authorization forms, etc.) while HIPAA security tends to be more subject to organizational the IT department because it deals with encryption, electronic security, disaster recovery, etc.

Do you have to worry about HIPAA? There are two main classifications under HIPAA: covered entities and business associates. Entities are the types of organizations and individuals dealing directly with protected health information and consist of providers of health care providers, health insurance and employer which finances health plans group. Anyone outside those categories is considered a business associate. Among the associated companies medical billing, medical storage, marketing organizations, software companies, manufacturers of medical devices, etc.

Then that business associates of the DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services) regulates entities are controlled by entities they work through a business associate agreement (also called contract business associate).

Compliance HIPAA has two main components: one being HIPAA employee training and other implementing processes, procedures and forms related to HIPAA.

While many of HIPAA regulations may seem common sense to consider them as just providing a certain level of standardization if an individual and organizations involved in their care may not know what to expect from each other.

HIPAA compliance not be a complicated process and once installed, can be relatively little effort to maintain.
