Man John Grisham

The medical term known as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) came to the fore after the conflict in Vietnam. Soldiers returning home mentally scarred by the ravages of war. Lives were changed forever. PTSD is nothing new, and it has certainly been around since man began to having their first battle, but has only recently been recognized as a particular problem.
Bedlam South is an interesting novel that casts a look at the Civil War as seen through the eyes of two Confederate soldiers, and brothers, and a doctor who works with the mentally ill. But are - these patients, alienated or simply pawns in the game of war?
I'm always curious about books with two authors, sometimes they work sometimes they do not. For my part, could not conceive of writing a novel with someone else, my ego is too big, and a novel is something very personal. A little research reveals that these two authors have been friends for many years. They are both new to the business of creation, but one of them may have got some advice from his older brother. Yes brother, Mark Grisham is John Grisham,. Digging further, we see that Mark is a bit of a fan history, especially the period of civil war, while David was interested in psychology and mental health since the many years.
What is interesting is that these two authors have managed to retain a voice and style consistent throughout Bedlam South, yet clearly it is possible to see which of them has inspired a plot in particular.
Two brothers, the battle seasoned Billy and his brother younger brother, Zeke, shoulder against shoulder, on the battlefield fighting for the Confederate army. Divided into a devastating battle with the forces North, they spend the rest of the war not knowing if the other is alive, but somehow trying to force the horrors of war and the potential results of their minds.
Dr. Joseph Bryarly executes pending an asylum in England, the call to arms comes, not without reluctance comes to America head Wingate Asylum in Richmond, Virginia, an institution for mentally ill and criminals of war.
Today the concept such a place is odious, but in the 1860s, it was not an unusual arrangement, and certainly Russia has done things very similar to 1970. The term therapy must be very loosely interpreted to be used in the context of "helping" patients.
Mid-1800s saw some treatments quite unique, most of whom questioned the mental health staff rather than patients. Dr. Bryarly is not without his own demons, and that the war progresses, it becomes increasingly disconnected from reality, seeking solace in alcohol and drugs. The horrors of his past correspondence with the horrors of this seems to overwhelm him. Can he survive? Or perhaps more importantly he will have survive?
I enjoyed Bedlam South, it is well written and well documented, but I still have some questions about the effectiveness for co-authors. The book is really two stories mostly unrelated to what the reader must wait until the last pages to understand how they relate. I think if the two stories intertwine more significantly in the first part of the book would have made a better final result.
I always liked it, and if you have someone on your gift list for Christmas, who enjoys historical novels of the period of civil war it is a must have. You can order your copy from the authors website.
