2) Look at the illustration of a headstone on page 83. Do you think the stone shows a Christian belief in life after death? Give reasons for your answer, showing you have considered more than one point of view. ( 5marks.)
The illustration is a gravestone saying... ‘In loving memory of John William Matts who died on April 29th 1974 aged 72 years. Till we meet again. Also his wife Mary, who died October 27th 1983, aged 81 years. May she rest in peace.’
Two statements here can be analysed:
1. Till we meet again
Belief that death is not the end and that we will all 'meet' again in the afterlife - this could refer to a Christian based Belief system, but also any other religion which believes in 'life after death' (and could even, at a push, include re-incarnation)
2. May she rest in peace
Belief that death is not the end, and any suffering experienced have now been eased. It uses the word 'rest' which suggests some form of ongoing conciousness
