Own How Body
when your own body cells get infected by a virus, does the antigen of that body cell change?
You know how pathogens have specific antigens so if the immune system doesn't recognize that antigen, it'll attack that pathogen? Well, what happens during cell mediated immunity? When your own cells get infected by a virus or fungi or something like that, does the antigen of that cell change?
The basic idea is that the antigen presenting cells of the body, such as the dendritic cells and the macrophages, show the T cells a new antigen that is a portion of the protein of the virus. The antigen piece is displayed by the major histocompatibility complex. This starts the process of the immune response. Infected ells which are not part of the immune system also display these antigen pieces, and the immune system may destroy these cells. That is, the immune response to the viral infection may be worse than the virus itself.
