I train more each day. I wear a little jewelry. I love horror movies. The other day my wife asked me why I am fighting the aging process. There are many reasons (fear of death, pride, etc.), but without thinking I replied: "Well, I'm not losing my job."

Aging. This is the only other thing we ad dare not speak. However, the "circle of life" is far from being phased in Jungle Agency. So here it is: Advertising (more precisely, the creative department) is a young man's game. Disagree? Look around you. Not all other creative employees in your company a scruffy, white, male full of jeans and loose T-shirt irony? I suspected.

With so many FTEs in their twenties and so few in their fifties, it is easy to see how scary the middle ages' can be. For the employee typically in their thirties, the arc of his career had better be brilliant because at its price point lower than any May not be enough to save his job. So how successful growth and old in advertising? My advice to three not-so-easy steps:

1. Do not shun the meetings because "they suck." One day there will be a meeting and you will be the topic. 'Nuff said.
2. Sell job. At first your work. Then someone else. In that order. If you can not do both, you'll be twice as valuable to your business. MGMT did both.
3. Stay relevant. Nothing is sadder than the grizzled editor who waxes nostalgic for the film cutting with a knife. Dead Man Walking. 3a) As for meetings, do not ignore the popular culture because "it sucks". If you do not keep people with ... You do.

What can I say? Exercise regularly. Stay abreast of trends, all of them. Get a haircut. However, you do, you must keep your head and body in the game. I am a great believer in being a "player / coach." Intervening on missions and helping others with theirs. Wear several hats. If in doubt follow the old axiom about staying young: Use it or lose it.
