The results of a survey recently by the American Massage Therapy Association showed a tripling of the percentage of older adults who received massage therapy in last year. More than 40 percent of those surveyed said they use massage therapy to treat health conditions.

Depression is increasing among older adults, which may be a result of changes lifestyle and enhance the feeling of isolation. Geriatric massage uses a gentle approach, and can be performed with the client lying down or sitting in a wheelchair. Particular attention is given to hands and feet, improving circulation and creating a sense high body awareness. Senior massage is beneficial for a number of conditions, including poor posture, resulting in muscle tension. Massage improves muscle tone and has a positive impact on muscle strength and coordination. A study by the American Public Health Association (APHA) concluded that seniors who received therapeutic Massage experienced improved vitality, anxiety, depression, positive well-being and overall health. These results were found in both independent and adults living in the community. In addition, the simple comfort that human contact can be translated into an invaluable opportunity for seniors who suffer from depression and loneliness. Geriatric massage is indeed an important tool for improving health and well-being of our elderly relatives.
