Society Wes Craven
There are a lot of chatter in the world. Talking Heads, experts, politicians, bloggers, people everywhere are clapping wildly - especially on the Internet. Sometimes, the volume and dissonance of all their speeches are overwhelming. There are many channels in the world today and as we are preparing through them with our different remote controls, it is bewildering how little good there is on these channels. Do you ever wish they would all stop talking and listen from time to time? It This is a place where issues of speech, and where you can talk.
Speech issues. We speak of it out. We speak of being heard. We speak to convince. We are talking about education. We are talking about reaching an agreement and the community. We are talking about changing the world. To speak well. And listen.
We talk to talk. At its root, the word is a human need, an end in itself. We speak of it out. Our thoughts and our ideas, our feelings and experiences should be resolved. At some fundamental level it does not even matter if anyone hears. We just need to speak. If we contain it, if we stop talking, we stew. The pressure and we must free talking, sharing. We speak to express ourselves. Our expression is ours alone. What we think feel and say: "This is fundamental to our identity, our individuality. As we speak, we share but we also know ourselves through our speech. Have you ever felt liberated and enlarged by the words finally made sense or idea emerging that long been in your heart or mind? To stop freedom of speech, silence, being silent is less than man. If a person speaks in the forest and no one else does, do they speak? Absolutely!
We speak to be heard, be heard to be understood, and be known. It does not always work. But we try again and again to really communicate, to communicate with someone. We are talking to know that we are not alone. There are so many people there, but it often feels difficult to find an audience, satisfaction listening to our thoughts and our feelings, our words. Of course, it really helps if we learn to listen as well as talk. Communion works better when we take turns and to build together - talking and listening.
We speak to convince. We try to convert others to our opinions, our visions, our understandings. Often, this brings us to the debate, which may be unsatisfactory, and may degenerate into arguments more painful. However, public debates have rules for good reasons. Remember that you do not struggle to convince your opponent. You debate to convince your audience. Those who hear you will not be convinced by the vulgarity, personal attacks, shouting or violence. They will be convinced by the power of your ideas, the reality of your experience, intelligence and clarity in your rhetoric. And sometimes, maybe you and I must be convinced by others. We should at least keep that option.
We talk to educate, be informed, to learn. We are talking about teaching. You have much to say and share, and much of it is good stuff that may benefit others. Some of what you teach has come through hard gained experience and accumulated wisdom. In speaking, and especially in writing, we learn too. Through the process of expression, writing and revision of our thoughts, they flourish and grow. As we hear the reactions of others, our ideas and expressions are refined. In the forums there is also the best ideas that we had ever assumed, the expressions that we had never heard before, the views we had not imagined. In better communication, there is a sort of revelation.
Perhaps most commonly, one speaks of seeking resonance to agree to receive support. More convincing anyone or education, what we really long is to see someone smile and nodding, say: "Yes, I agree. That is why so many people listen to talk radio or go to church or a bar, or sit in the breakfast room. He is to speak and hear someone say: "You got that right, my friend. In these places sure as we speak comfortably. We try new ideas. We intend to strengthen our thoughts into the mouths of others, and we believe more fervently. We speak to find and build community. Is it any wonder that people gather on the Internet - and many others - in order to repeat their shared ideas and ideologies to another? At their root, communities are often simply groups of people who still talk to each other, again and again. They forgive the fighting, and remember and recall again the stories they share.
We are talking about changing the world, because that questions of speech. We talk to organize, attract supporters, to mobilize public opinion to shape policy and politics. We vote. We write letters. We read news and reviews. We respond. We speak to power. To speak is power. Keeping quiet is impotence. Those who say that your speech is impotent or does not matter are apathetic, cynical or Craven. Maybe they are all of these things. We speak to encourage civil society and civil discourse. So, talk! And listen.
