A popular novel from such an author is going to get rave reviews from those who like popular novels and generally poor reviews from those who like more literary stuff. Robin Cook sells; therefore many like him. But he isn't taught in schools--is he?
The Dickens--Hawthorne-Faulkner crowd isn't going to like him. The Stephen King crowd will. (And in fact, I like all those writers--but I'm an outlier.)
